House & Garden - July 2010

Extract from House & Garden UK - July 2010 - by Cathy strongman

Long gone are the days when African safaris involved treacherous explorations into the wilderness. Luxurious camps have replaced the Victorians' cumbersome tents; guides now whisk you in four-by-fours to beauty spots teeming with game; and tourists wield digital cameras instead of guns. But what has been gained in comfort and accessibility has often been lost in seclusion, with scrums of vehicles now clogging up many of the better-known national parks. To experience untamed Africa you need to head to camps hidden in the remotest nooks of the continent, and Tanzania is a great place to start.
