Nomad guides fly the flag for responsible tourism in the Serengeti

Hello,

We were recently on safari with Nomad and wanted to writenot so much to praise the fantastic camps (Ndutu and Loliondo), the friendlyand professional staff, or the great food (all of which deserve a great deal of praise) but to specifically applaud the behaviour of yourguides.

Our guide, Rowland, was wonderful: friendly, knowledgableand he really contributed to making our safari a magical experience. During oursafari we realised that all of this was accompanied by something that wasperhaps even more important to us: an approach to animals that was bothrespectful and responsible.

Rowland demonstrated this from the start by nevercrowding the animals we saw. And it was this feature that we realised wascommon to all Nomad guides. Whilst some other vehicles would crowd in,effectively making the animal(s) change their behaviour in some way (direction, purpose, etc.) the Nomad vehicles we saw during our drives were all ensuringanimals had space.

Not only was such an approach something we valued but, infact, it actually provided us with wonderful experiences where animals wouldwalk up to and around the vehicle because it hadn't been driven very close tothem from the start.

The Nomad guides certainly deserve plaudits for theirbehaviour - but the creation of such an ethos also stems from the company forwhom they work and clearly Nomad has adopted an approach which provides afantastic opportunity for tourists, but without compromising the animals whothey have come to see.

Thank you once again for providing us with a wonderfulexperience - and we hope that one day we will be back!

Best wishes,

EC and RB

Lamai Serengeti - out of this world

“Wonderful experience in a beautiful camp” - KI-NRT

Reviewed January 25, 2012 on Trip Advisor

The location of this place is out of this world. It's situated high atop a beautiful "Kopje" (rocky hill), the view from the camp (and rooms) is amazing - you can literally see the vast Serengeti plains for miles. The morning sunrise is a spectacle to behold, and it's replete with thousands of Wildebeest as far as the eye can see.

Unlike other areas within the Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, this area (referred to as "Kogatende") is very remote, with very few camps. Meaning that tourists are very few in number, giving you a sense of being one with nature. Rarely did we ever run across other vehicles during our game drives.

Lamai Serengeti itself is, as the previous poster stated, understated luxury. The natural materials and colors used for the lodge blends in beautifully with the environment. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable with all of the amenities that you'd want in a high specification safari lodge. The food at Lamai is healthy and delicious as well - lunch is buffet-style, whereas for dinner you'll be served an appetizer, salad and a choice from several entrees, all done amazingly well.

We stayed at Lamai in the middle of the migration season and were able to see the Wildebeest crossings every single day... an awe-inspiring spectacle to say the least! In addition, we saw numerous lions, leopards, cheetas, giraffes... basically, everything that anyone would hope to see at a Tanzanian safari. Our guide Philip was knowledgeable, friendly, and - because we arranged a private tour - he was able to cater to our every whim.

One other benefit of this part of the Serengeti is that you're allowed out of the Land Cruiser, which is prohibited in most parts of Tanzania. You'll definitely want to walk around after hours and hours of being on bumpy game drives.

The lodge itself, as well as the location, staff, guides, activities and food made our stay an unforgettable one. It's not cheap, but for a once-in-a-lifetime trip (although we're not sure about that anymore, as far as we're concerned!), we highly recommend Lamai. It should be on the short list for anyone looking for an authentic and comfortable safari experience.

Lamai Serengeti - the greatest location

This was Myles Turner’s favourite campsite + you can see why!
It’s the greatest location in the Serengeti – if not the whole of Africa?
It is maajabu – miraculous – and we have loved every minute of our stay here
with Richard + Rem – specially the breakfast time leopard!

Asante sana

An elegant safari experience

“Most memorably magical 4 days.... ever!!!!!! Such an elegant safari experience!!”
Reviewed December 30, 2011 NEW

My husband and I travelled to Africa in late November for our honeymoon. We spent 4 days at Nomad's Serengeti Safari Camp at Prince Charles Campsite at the base of a hill in Rongai. Let's start at our airport pickup....Chedi, our fabulous guide, met our plane in a super high end decked out pale green safari jeep at Seronera airstrip in the middle of the Seregeti. The jeep had an ice chest abound with bottled coca cola, sprite and water as refreshments for us. Chedi says to us, "okay if we do a little animal viewing on our way back to camp?" We respond, "OF COURSE!!!" not expecting to run into many animals. Boy, were we surprised when after only driving about 1/8th of a mile, the two of us were standing out the top of the jeep taking photo after photo of giraffe, an elephant, zebras, a warthog family, impala, a pond overflowing with hippos, storks and Egyptian geese!!!

Wethen came upon a couple of cheetah roaming through a field. We also saw a beautiful lone leopard stretching comfortable on an old broken tree. Upon ourarrival at the campsite, we were greeted by Babu and a few other SerengetiSafari Camp staff with a cocktail and an umbrella (it had started to rain). The campsite was gorgeous....it felt straight out of Out of Africa or some royal camping outfit in the 1920s.

They poured us wine beside a dreamy campfire theydrew for us. Then they invited us to a wonderful meal in the dining tent. I hadpassion fruit souffle for dessert!!! Can you believe it???? We had hot bucket showers and the layout of the tents were very nice! The beds were incredibly warm and comfy too- they even put hot water bottles in them each night! We could hear zebras calling out in the night and lions roaring as we dozed off to sleep.

The next day we were woken up by the staff before sunrise with hot coffee and tea and off we went in the jeep to get an early start on the day! Chedi had the jeep packed with blankets to keep us warm and a full breakfast spread that we later enjoyed out on the plains!! That day we saw hyena, vultures, family of lions, tons of varieties of beautiful birds and the list goes on and on and on.

Chedi was very very knowledgeable about the animals we saw and also knowledgeable about the terrain and the park itself. The last day we had an elephant pass right in front of our jeep and we ate lunch near a meeting of two rivers where about 30 hippos were frolicking. On our last morning, the entire team of staff came out to say goodbye. I seriously got teary with this emotional send-off. They were all so sweet and took such good care of us during our stay!!! I highly recommend going to the Serengeti during November. It was very lush and vibrantly green that time of year! Go, go, go toSerengeti Safari Camp!!!!!

Lamai Serengeti - the perfect spot

What a fantastic place!. We had an amazing time there. Bas and Suzanne were the perfect hosts. They made us feel so welcome and almost as if we were part of a large family group. We dined together every night and their attention to detail is just spot on and yet the atmosphere is very casual - not easy to do but they certainly have done it. The food was wonderful - the best we have ever experienced on safari.

The staff were fantastic too, friendly, engaging and so attentive. There was one young lad called Reuben who entertained us every day. He was so passionate about his Massai life but also so enthusiastic about his job with the camp. We think he will go far. We had brilliant safaris with a guide called Godwin. He was extremely knowledgeable and great fun to be with. The location of the camp is so well though out.

From a distance you cannot see the buildings - they blend so well in to the natural environment. The view from the room is spectacular.

We wish you every luck with the camp. We would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone as the perfect spot - one of the best places we have ever visited.

Lamai Serengeti on Trip Advisor

“safari paradise”
Reviewed November 24, 2011NEW

The location is amazing and so are the views: you can see for miles across the serengeti from your room, the restaurant and the pool and you'll feel like you have it all to yourself. The place has been designed beautifully - understated luxury that blends in with the natural surroundings. The food is like that you'd get at a high class restaurant, only lighter (and all the better for it). All the staff are brilliant and seem to take pride in doing their jobs really well. For us the most perfect place you could stay for a safari, especially if like us you're lucky enough to be there during the migrations.

Serengeti Safari Camp - blew us away

The safari experience totally blew us away.  I will never look at camping in the same way again!!!

To be woken up every morning, with fresh coffee and to be able to sit outside our tent and watch the sunrise with zebra and wildebeest wandering by was truly magical. The location of the camp was just brilliant - we felt that we were right in the midst of it all.  And we truly were as one morning we woke up to a family of Elephants trooping through the staff quarters and a young male lion wandering near the main camp!

The staff were fantastic and treated us like royalty!  We felt totally spoilt and pampered from the moment we arrived.  The thing I was most surprised about the food, it was absolutely amazing!  I was totally in awe of the meals they managed to knock up in the camp, it put my cooking to shame!

Rem our guide was fantastic, so knowledgeable and interesting... and just a great guy in general. Really chatty and friendly but also would gave us plenty of time to ourselves too which made the whole thing a really relaxing experience.
