Northern Serengeti & Mahale chimps out of peak season

3 nights Lamai Serengeti

4 nights Greystoke Mahale

Lamai Serengeti and Greystoke Mahale are possibly the most iconic lodges in East Africa.  Lamai is beautifully located around a granite kopje, with the most commanding views in the Serengeti.  Greystoke is bizarrely set on a crunchy white sandy beach lapped by gin-clear water and backed by forested mountains inhabited by wild chimpanzees.  A stay here is something to anticipate, and will impart memories to cherish.  The combination of these two camps is an unmissable journey into some of Tanzania's most beautiful places.

  • The northern area of the Serengeti at this time of year is blissfully empty of people.  The migration is predominantly in the southern part of the park but that doesn't mean there's nothing to see: the resident game is similar to that of the Masai Mara - lots of cats, eles, beautiful plains game and even rhino.  Plus the scenery is magnificent.
  • In Mahale, as well as days spent chimping, expect to see other forest game, warthog, baboon (even down on the beach) and possibly even leopard as well as great flowers, trees and exceptional birdlife. Enjoy some kayaking, fishing and even swimming and snorkelling to view the phenomenal variety of cichlids, many endemic to Lake Tanganyika - one vast tropical fish aquarium.
  • Our flights between Northern and Western Tanzania are on Mondays and Thursdays only, with a departure from Arusha around 0800, returning to Arusha around 1800.
  • Combine with Serengeti Safari Camp for your migration action.
  • We welcome children from 8 years and above but regrettably only children of 12 and above can go walking and chimp trekking - this purely for sensible safety reasons.

Day 1. Lamai Serengeti

Depart Arusha by scheduled flight to the northern Serengeti.  Landing here you realise the sheer scale of the scenery, and the amazing views from each and every room. Settle in and enjoy lunch with the plains rolling out before you.  An afternoon game drive around the kopjes in search of big cats before returning to the camp for a sundowner and dinner.

Day 2. Lamai Serengeti

Lamai has it's own character - each room was designed and styled using only locally available materials.  The camp is spacious and comfortable with a beautiful pool, gorgeous lounge and a dining room that serves delicious food.  We keep the atmosphere friendly and informal.  When you're not in camp, you're out exploring in our custom built game drive vehicles, in the company of expert guides.

Day 3. Lamai Serengeti

Early morning game drives with a picnic breakfast under a lone tree, watching a family of elephant gently grazing in the open grassland - this is a sort of freedom that is hard to imagine.  Lunch and a swim back at camp and an afternoon game drive and sundowner on the Mara River.

Day 4. Greystoke Mahale

Depart the Serengeti on a scheduled flight arriving in Mahale around lunchtime.

Head down the lake on our beautiful dhow to Greystoke Mahale in time for lunch. Settle into camp, or loosen up with a short walk in the forest followed by sundowners looking across Lake Tanganyika to the Congo beyond.

Day 5. Greystoke Mahale

As news comes in from the trackers, head off into the forest in search of your first group of chimps. As well as time spent watching the chimps as they play, groom and possibly even hunt, you should see other forest game as well as amazing birds, butterflies and plants.

Day 6. Greystoke Mahale

You'll be able to spend time chimp trekking on each full day you're in Mahale. In addition there'll be the chance to go for deep water swims, fish in the lake, kayak or just head up to one of the amazing waterfall pools in a quiet corner of the forest.

Day 7. Greystoke Mahale

A last trip into the forest followed by sundowners & sashimi on the dhow and dinner on the beach under a ceiling of stars.

Day 8. Depart

Depart camp after breakfast for the return dhow trip to the airstrip and your onward flight back to Arusha.
