Family Safari - A week of exclusive camps in the Serengeti and the Selous

3 nights Mkombe's House Lamai

4 nights Kiba Point Selous

All on your own terms, in our two completely private safari camps experience the best of the Serengeti migration in the Mara River area of Northern Serengeti; then head over to the Selous for big mammals and river life.

The Serengeti is a year round destination but the best locations will vary with the movements of the game. The Selous is dry, hot with good wildlife during July - October, and November - March & June, it is likely to be greener with beautiful birdlife and lovely landscapes. You may work slightly harder to see wildlife but it's still a wonderful time to visit. April/May - Sand Rivers is closed. This itinerary is typical of June - November.

Completely private safari accommodation - Mkombe's House Lamai in the Serengeti and Kiba Point in the Selous.

A combination of two of Tanzania's best wildlife areas, each with their own character.

The epic spectacle of the migration in the Mara River area of the northern Serengeti: great herds, the chance of river crossings, accompanying predators and lots of other big game.

The wildest part of the Selous in Tanzania's far south: a great variety of activities from boating to walking, game drives and fly camping, fishing and bush picnics. A great spot to combine relaxation and activity.

Expert Nomad guides throughout.

Two beautiful lodges that offer everything you need, and all yours completely, yet don't take you too far from nature.

Excellent for families or groups of friends. We welcome children of all ages at Mkombe's House Lamai, and children over 8 at Kiba Point Selous.

Day 1. Arusha - Northern Serengeti

Morning flight from Arusha to Kogatende in the northern Serengeti. Met by your private Nomad car and guide for a short game drive to Mkombe's House Lamai - almost invisible from the plains but commanding endless views across this beautiful landscape.  Settle into your private home away from home before a delious lunch in the open dining room. Have a chat to your guide and house crew about what you would like to do - perhaps a gentle afternoon game drive before returning to camp in time for a hot shower and ice cold gin and tonic.

The Big Push

Day 2. Northern Serengeti

Today you can do whatever you please - no need to fit into other peoples schedules here. We would suggest that after an early breakfast, you head out with your private Nomad guide to make the most of the day.  At this time of the year, there's a strong possibility that the migration is in the area so you'll be out in search of the herds. Whether they are peacefully spread out in their thousands across the plains or gathering in a frenzy on the Mara River banks, it's always an unforgettable spectacle. Return for lunch in camp followed by a siesta and a swim to recharge batteries for an afternoon walk and sundowner.

Accommodation: Mkombe's House Lamai

Day 3. Northern Serengeti

Some days you may just want to enjoy the magic of Mkombe's House and soak up the views by the pool. If you are here with your little wild ones send them out to learn about the critters just around the house with your guide. Lizards, hyraxes and all manner of wonderful beasties are waiting to be discovered.

Day 4. Serengeti - Selous

Catch the morning flight from here via Arusha, to the Selous landing at our Kiba airstrip in the afternoon (stops at other airstrips along the way are expected). Settle in to your open-fronted exclusive lodge on the banks of the Rufiji River.

Take an early evening trip down the Rufiji River, slowly floating downstream with a cold beer, watching the river life go by.

Accommodation: Kiba Point Selous

Day 5. Selous Game Reserve

Head out in the cool of the early morning and take a walk along the riverine forest; have a cook-out breakfast en route. After lunch we'd suggest a short game drive out towards the hide, where you can hang out and watch the game undisturbed.

Accommodation: Kiba Point Selous

Day 6. Selous Game Reserve

After breakfast in camp, take a game drive further out into the reserve, perhaps pausing for a picnic in one of our favourite spots. Head back to camp in the afternoon for a siest and a swim before a sundowner on the deck.

Accommodation: Kiba Point Selous

Day 8. Selous - Dar es Salaam

A gentle wake up this morning with the sun over the river.  Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and perhaps a last dip in the pool before heading for a short game drive to the airstip to catch your scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam and home.
