Green Season Mahale

  • Mahale, during our Green Season, is a spectacular place to be. The haze, often prevalent during the Dry Season months, is gone, leaving the air crystal clear - views across the lake are stunning and it's a photographers dream.

The forest is at its resplendent best, butterflies and birds are everywhere and the many waterfalls are full of life.

Mornings in the forest are cool and fresh and you're generally less likely to see any other visitors. The park is much quieter at this time of year and, because of this, chimp trekking feels even more intimate and unhurried.

This is a time of sporadic rain, with dramatic storms passing through but rarely around for long. This can create a drama and intensity that is spectacular to witness, with huge clouds build-ups on the horizon. After the rains, there is a wonderful freshness and the forest comes alive; keen birders and naturalists will be in their element!

  • In Mahale, as well as days spent chimping, expect to see other forest game, warthog, baboon (even down on the beach) and possibly even leopard as well as great flowers, trees and exceptional birdlife. Enjoy some kayaking, fishing and even swimming and snorkelling to view the phenomenal variety of cichlids, many endemic to Lake Tanganyika - one vast tropical fish aquarium.
  • Expect to see very very few other tourists.
  • Our flights between Northern and Western Tanzania are on Mondays and Thursdays only, with a departure from Arusha around 0800, returning to Arusha around 1800.
  • We can easily organize pick-ups and/or drop-offs in the Serengeti pre or post a stay at Greystoke Mahale and can also arrange onward flights to Southern Tanzania or Zanzibar/islands.
  • The rates listed are based on travel from and back to Arusha airport.
  • We'd thoroughly recommend combining your stay at Greystoke Mahale with nights spent at its wild brother camp, Chada Katavi. Do take a look at our Mahale/Katavi safari itinerary.
  • Greystoke Mahale is closed from 26 March to 30 May 2011 for camp maintenance.
  • We welcome children from 8 years and above at Greystoke Mahale, but regrettably only children of 12 and above can go chimp trekking - this purely for sensible safety reasons.

Day 1 - Greystoke Mahale

  • Depart Arusha on Nomad's scheduled flight to Western Tanzania,  via both Serengeti & Katavi, arriving in Mahale late morning.

  • Light lunch on the dhow as you head down the lake to Greystoke itself. Settle into camp, swim or loosen up with a short walk in the forest followed by sundowners looking across Lake Tanganyika to the Congo beyond.

Day 2 - Greystoke Mahale

  • As news comes in from the trackers, head off into the forest in search of your first group of chimps. As well as time spent watching the chimps as they play, groom and possibly even hunt, you should see other forest game as well as amazing birds, butterflies and plants.

Day 3 - Greystoke Mahale

  • You'll be able to spend time chimp trekking on each full day you're in Mahale. In addition there'll be the chance to swim, fish in the lake, kayak or just head up to one of the amazing waterfall pools in a quiet corner of the forest.

Day 4 - Greystoke Mahale

  • A last trip into the forest followed by sundowners & sashimi on the dhow and dinner on the beach under a ceiling of stars.

Day 5 - Depart

  • Depart camp after breakfast for the return dhow trip to the airstrip and your onward flight from Mahale.
