Selous Nov - Mar
where yesterday we went by car, today we go by boat
Our green season in Selous runs from November through to May and during this time the reserve takes on an altogether softer guise. After the first rains - and almost overnight - the area turns a vivid emerald and water is super abundant.
For many of us, this is our favourite time of year. More subtle perhaps than the dry season, but full of rewards and surprises; fireflies create natural Christmas trees at dusk in the early green season, baobabs fill with huge flowers and fruit and massive thunderheads - lit up like chinese lanterns - decorate the night sky.
And the big game is still very much around. There's a collective sigh of relief as rivers and lakes fill up, and the pressure on limited resources lifts. Hippos are released from crowded conditions and herds of elephant gorge themselves on lush green grass and fruits.
Like the lion, you may have to work a little harder to find game during the green season, but there's no question that it's worth being here.
