Bushbuck in Katavi

12 January 2010

By Maripet Koipa, Guide - Chada Katavi

The bushbuck is a small browser antelope. The horns are only possessed by the males, and they make a barking sound like a domestic dog. They are often seen in open glades in the early mornings and late afternoons. You’ll almost always see them near cover, and often with other small mammals likes monkeys – the advantage of the presence of the monkeys is to alert the bushbuck to any predators, particularly leopards.

Their gestation period is 6-7 months and their lifespan is about 12 years or more. The young are kept close until about 4 months, and they then reach maturity at around 11 months.
