Our final six days in Tanzania were spent at Lamai, Serengeti. The placement of each bungalow, accessed down a winding dirt path, and situated on a hill overlooking the vast plains was perfection. The guiding was comfortable, professional and enthusiastic. Our guide clearly loved being out with the vast variety of birds, animals, and flora. Because I am a photographer, our guide was careful to position the vehicle for the best photos. The rooms were well provisioned and the beds very comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was also very good with hot water as needed. The main room with a cozy bar area and a section to overlook the plains was perfect after a day of viewing. Nomad is also committed to various interests in local villages. We visited a home for girls who escaped from their families to avoid female genital mutilation, or cutting as it is called locally. One young female staff member at Lamai lived at this home, graduated from high school, and then took hotel management training. Instead of just viewing animals and nature and flying home, I appreciated seeing how a NGO helps local young girls. Another memory that I loved was breakfast on the plains after an early morning of seeing elephants, antelope, hippos, and my favorite bird - a Yellow-throated Long claw.
