The best of both worlds

Price From: $6,200pps

The best of the northern Serengeti - ideal for catching the migration between July and October, and home to fantastic year round resident game. Followed by the adventure of Nyerere National Park where you can experience the wonders of the bush by boat, on foot or out under the stars in our fly camp.  We think this is one of the best itineraries; heaps of variety in landscape, camp experience, activities and wildlife.

January

Price From: $11,100pps

This is one of our favourite times of year at Lamai. Incredible resident game abounds in this area year round, and there are far fewer people as the crowds head south chasing the migration. Down in Nyerere the rain has started and the bush is incrdibly beautiful and green, trees are in flower and it feels so full of life. Birds are starting to get their breeding plumage and there is usually lots of babies around.

June

Price From: $11,100pps

Dependent on weather patterns there is a possibility that the first migration herds will reach the Northern Serengeti at the end of June and you can see them gathering around Lamai. In Nyerere the water recedes, grasses start to dry out and leaves begin to fall. Wildlife is in top condition. Fishing is usually superb as the water levels start to fall.

July

Price From: $11,100pps

The wildebeest gather in their millions in the Northern Serengeti and start to criss cross over the Mara River. A river crossing is a phenomenal sight, truly the stuff of wildlife documentaries. In Nyerere wildlife is concentrated along the river and lakes. Walking is superb as the vegetation opens up. Fishing and river sightings are excellent as sand banks are exposed for hippos and crocodiles.

October

Price From: $11,100pps

The wildebeest continue to criss cross over the Mara River. A river crossing is a phenomenal sight, truly the stuff of wildlife documentaries.  By the end of the month in Nyerere, even some of the smaller lakes become dry. Elephants resort to stripping bark off trees for sustenance. The first migratory birds begin to arrive. Fishing and fly camping are good.

November

Price From: $7,200pps

The migration starts to head south but there is still the chance of a few stragglers crossing the Mara River. The resident game starts to breath a sigh of relief as the herds and the madness that follows them leaves town for a few months. This is a beautiful time of year at Lamai. In Nyerere we may see the first rains. The bush is still dry and wildlife gathers around water sources. Once the rains do arrive its an incredible spectacle to witness the bush come alive with new green grass shoots sprouting almost overnight after the first big rainfall.

December

Price From: $11,100pps

The bush is verdant and green and there is plenty to see, without too many other people around. The resident game breathes a sigh of relief as the herds and the madness that follows them leaves town for a few months. In Nyerere waterholes and lakes start to refill, migratory birds arrive and the bush comes to life with lots of babies being born. Please note that over Christmas the from price for this safari is $10,250pps.

Days 1 - 4

Lamai Serengeti

Get yourself to Lamai between November and March, slow down a little and we'll show you another side to the Serengeti. Unlike the southern plains of the Serengeti that dry out, forcing all but the hardiest of species to leave, this area remains lush and green. There's a collective sigh of relief from the resident game when the one and a half million migrating wildebeest - and the madness that attends them - leave town for a few months. And the resident game at Lamai Serengeti is spectacular. We venture out in custom-built 4x4s, or on foot to explore the winding river lines, rocky outcrops and sweeping plains. If you were to visit just one part of the Serengeti, we really think it ought to be here. Read more about Lamai Serengeti.

Days 4 - 8

Sand Rivers Selous

Days at Sand Rivers are about exploring. Our open-sided 4x4 vehicles are a great way of seeing things. For covering a bit of distance when that's what's needed. But, we like to retain spontaneity wherever we can. Often the best way to see things, to avoid scattering animals from the lakeshore, or spooking a herd of elephant as they feed, is to hop down and quietly work our way into a good position on foot. And the same goes for our boats. Being on the river is a fantastic contrast to time spent in a vehicle. All in all, days at Sand Rivers aren't about box ticking, or endless driving in search of the next animal. It's a sense of gradual absorption in this corner of the natural world that we'd love you to feel. Walk into our flycamp for the night

Walk into our flycamp for the night

After tea this afternoon we will desert the lodge and walk with you into the big beyond. The further we go, the deeper the wilderness, the bigger it feels. At some point, we come upon our camp-out spot and home for one night. There’s a murmur of voices, the fire is lit. It feels secure and cosy. After a good nights sleep under the African sky we will give you breakfast, and walk you back to the lodge for the rest of your stay.
