What you need to know
LOCATION: In the best game area of Ruaha National Park.
SETTING: In a secluded grove of Kigelia or “Sausage Trees” high on the banks of the Ifuguru Sand River.
ACCOMMODATION: Six large safari tents with comfortable beds and wide verandahs, one of which is the family tent with two bedrooms. En-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and outdoor safari style bucket showers under the stars. No running water but hot and cold provided as and when requested. Lighting is provided via solar.
HIGHLIGHTS: A remote park with fabulous game, particularly cats, big herds of elephant, greater & lesser kudu. Very few camps, wonderful scenery—including epic baobab trees. Open vehicles, walking safaris and great birding.
ACTIVITIES: Game drives in open 4WD vehicles, walking safaris, sundowners and bush breakfasts, outstanding mammal and bird viewing.
SEASONS: June to September; warm days and cool nights, best time of year for walking safaris. Great elephant and buffalo sightings. October-November: heavy concentrates of game around the inland lakes, weather dry and hot. December-March: prolific bird life, many animals calving, weather starts to get humid, with possibility of rain.
CHILD POLICY: We are delighted to accept children over the age of 8 at Kigelia Ruaha. Only children over 12yrs will be allowed to take part in walking safaris.
HOW TO GET THERE: Nearest airstrip: Msembe, Ruaha National Park. Ruaha is accessed by daily flights from Arusha (flights from the Serengeti and Manyara connect to this flight also), Dar and the Selous. There are daily flights out of Ruaha to the Selous, Dar (connecting onwards to Zanzibar and Mafia), and the Serengeti. Ruaha also features on the twice weekly flight schedule linking southern Tanzania with western Tanzania: flights operate on Monday and Thursday mornings to and from Katavi and Mahale National Parks.
