From Mkombe, with love

Nomad founder, Mkombe Mniko, was a guide who cherished this area and connected strongly with children – and their parents. He was an inspirational man, always smiling, with an exuberance for Africa’s wild places. Mkombe was a huge part of Nomad in the early days and there was huge sadness across the safari world when he sadly passed away in 2008 after a short illness.

Mkombe left behind a legacy of wonderful memories and his child-like excitement for being in wild places will never be forgotten. We’re proud that this little corner of the Serengeti that he loved so much, should carry his name.

The Serengeti… on your schedule

Lovingly designed for close families and friend, this is the only true private home in the whole Serengeti, and it doesn’t get better than this.

We know from decades of our own safaris that the best way to be out in Africa’s wild places is surrounded by your favourite people, and running your safari on your own timetable.

So whether it be with your family, or your very closest friends this House is a place to really escape from it all, with a private guide and vehicle (and private house staff) the northern Serengeti is yours to explore without being dictated by other people’s schedules or preferences.

Terrific Stay

Terrific stay from the lovely welcome we got on our arrival to the last day! Waking up to the view, coffee on the porch, seeing two lionesses with their cubs, the river with crocodiles and hippos, water buffalo, birds, and so many other interesting wildlife.

FAQs

Is Tanzania a good honeymoon destination?

Absolutely. Wild, remote and deeply romantic. We believe a safari honeymoon strikes the perfect balance of adventure and calm. No two days are ever the same and what better way to kick off married life.

How much driving is involved in a Tanzania Safari?

The driving distances on a Tanzania safari can vary depending on the area you are visiting and also your appetite for driving. Northern Tanzania allows for a full driving circuit with National Parks within reasonable distances. We love to drive when we can as we believe it allows for an exciting adventure through towns and villages and you learn so much about Tanzania and its wonderful people.

When is the green season?

From late November to May. It's a gorgeous time to be in Tanzania - expect dramatic skies, lush landscapes and superb wildlife. Also, less people.

How much do I tip my safari guide?

Firstly, you should only tip of you genuinely feel that the service you have received warrants it. Tips are never expected, but always appreciated. Tipping amounts very much depends on your experience but we tend to work with a range of 10-15 US dollars per guest per day. Equally, it's not unusual for a family or group to pitch in slightly below this as a group tip.

What are sundowners?

Sundowners are a wonderful part of safari life. At the end of your day in the bush, its time to kick back and celebrate the sightings, the adventures and time with your loved ones. All with something cold in hand!

How long are the drives between camps?

It depends, some are short hops, others can be full-day journeys. Often, the journey is the experience and can become the ultimate game drive as you traverse different areas of National Parks.

What is the typical food when on safari?

Fresh, locally sourced, and surprisingly varied given the remote locations of some camps. Imagine homemade bread, seasonal veg, cooking with delicious Swahili spices. All accompanied by far-stretching views or enjoyed under a shady tree.

Can children go on safari?

A safari with your family is a magical way to spend quality time with your children, immersed in the wilderness and surrounded by wildlife. Time on safari with your family allows all to disconnect from your busy daily lives. Tailor your family safari with a private guide and vehicle plus make sure you look at family specific properties such as Mkombe's House. When inside the national parks, most camps have age restrictions with 8+ being a general guide.

Much depends on the age of your children, if on the young side then we'd advise not trying to cram too much in to your days but plan your safari in bitesize chunks bringing new excitement around every corner.
