James Mausa
Kusini, Serengeti, Northern Tanzania
Born and raised in Arusha, on the eastern slopes of Mount Meru, he grew up in the middle of forests, farmland and the realities of rural life. Time spent outdoors shaped an early respect for wildlife and a natural curiosity to travel further afield.
Early encounters with safari camps sparked an interest in tourism. Although his plans for college were interrupted by financial constraits, his enthusiasm for safari never really changed. He found other ways in through small colleges and learning on the job wherever he could.
He began his career in hospitality in Arusha in 2010, and joined Nomad a year later at Lamai Serengeti, starting in the stores department. From there, he worked his way steadily through the ranks, moving into administration, back of house and front of house roles, learning the inner workings of camp life as he went along.
Over time, he became a familiar face across several Nomad camps as a Relief Manager, known for stepping in, getting stuck in, and keeping things running smoothly. After five years as Assistant Camp Manager at Lamai, he now works as a Camp Manager for our newly opened camp, Kusini Serengeti, still driven by the same mix of curiosity, people, and being in the bush
