Experience the ultimate luxury safari with a night in a star bed

What could be better than sleeping under canvas, lying snug and warm in your bed, listening to the night sounds and dreaming about your day? How about sleeping under the stars, waking up to see the moon shining down on you and smelling the fresh, cool air as it ripples the net around you?

Our star beds at Kigelia are raised on wooden platforms seamlessly integrated with your tent, easy to climb up to if the mood takes you. You can look over the river bed and surrounds before you turn in for the night or watch the dawn sunrise over the baobabs without even having to get out of bed.

Sunrise Wake-Up

Enjoy a morning wake-up call with steaming hot tea or coffee brought right to you. You might then choose to take it back to bed and watch the sunrise over the baobabs, or an elephant or two, while considering whether it’s even worth getting up at all.

Star Bed Soundscape

This is what waking up in a star bed at Kigelia can sound like. The bush is never quiet, and you'll hear a variety of animal, bird, and insect sounds around and below you; in the dark, the sounds appear magnified and with far more clarity. The dawn chorus erupts pre-light with so many birds, and it's a wonder to hear and enjoy as you lie snug and warm in your comfortable bed.

When to go

Kigelia is our classic bush camp deep in the wild and quietly sitting in the best wildlife spot in the park. It is here that the wildlife is most concentrated and it is not uncommon for giant elephant to be wandering through camp or wild dog scoping out the dry riverbed in front of camp. Each room at Kigelia now has the most wonderfully designed private star bed for you to sleep out under a blanket of stars. The star beds are seamlessly integrated with your tent allowing you to embrace untamed Ruaha at its best.

We were truly spoiled by all the staff. Accommodations are amazing. Location wonderful. But the key to this being our best vacation ever is the incredible staff. Nothing is too much bother. Everything with a smile. Truly the best.

FAQs

Is there Wi-Fi in our camps?

Yes we do have WI-FI at our camps - in the most remote locations the Wi-Fi can be limited to your tent or the main mess. We try to keep wi-fi in the tents so the mess and lounge area continue to be social and communal areas.

What is the typical food when on safari?

Fresh, locally sourced, and surprisingly varied given the remote locations of some camps. Imagine homemade bread, seasonal veg, cooking with delicious Swahili spices. All accompanied by far-stretching views or enjoyed under a shady tree.

What is the best month to travel to Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year round destination, especially in Northern Tanzania. So your visit often depends on family schedules or particular wildlife experiences on the bucket list. We love January to March in Ngorongoro and southern Serengeti Plains when the air is clear, nice temperatures and the migration arrives in town for calving season. This is an extraordinary time to be there.

Can I charge my devices whilst on safari?

Yes you can charge your devices whilst on safari. Most camps have connection points in the tent or room. Also, in most safari vehicle there is charging points available so you can keep all your cameras and phones topped up and never miss that wonderful sighting.

Can I go on safari and visit Zanzibar in one trip?

Yes absolutely, Tanzania has superb transport links from the mainland to Zanzibar as well as neighbouring islands too. Many travellers choose to spend some time in the wild on safari before heading to the coast for some R&R.

How many days is enough for a Tanzania safari?

Many people underestimate how immersive a safari experience is. Time in the bush can be tiring – most mornings you will be up before sunrise as the wild wakes up your day continues into long evenings spent under the stars. If you’re travelling with children, we always recommend a private guide and exclusive vehicle (included as standard with Nomad) that means a lie in here and there is always possible.

There is no rule for the number of days on safari but we would recommend taking your time in each location and not rushing through safari parks. Give yourselves time to stop and immerse yourself in the area. Many travellers consider a pit stop at the beaches of Zanzibar or Mafia Island to re-charge post safari and before they head back to the real world.

What is the difference between Serengeti National Park and Nyerere National Park?

The first difference is terrain. The Serengeti is all vast plains and iconic kopjes, whereas Nyerere is riverine wilderness where variety in activity becomes ever possible, boating, fishing etc. Both areas are wild with superb game but very different in landscape.

Is it safe to drink tap water in Tanzania?

We advise against drinking the tap water in Tanzania and as such, we provide safe drinking water in all camps and vehicles so guests can remain well hydrated throughout their trip.
