Safe Safaris in the time of Covid-19

Something that has kept us busy is putting in place strict procedures for our camps and operations around Tanzania, ensuring that our staff and guests are safe when travel resumes. The safety of our guests and staff is, and always has been, our utmost priority.

This page outlines the procedures we have in place across our camps in response to the current, and potentially future, environment that Covid-19 has created across the globe.

We are continuing to review and maintain an exceptionally high standard in our approach towards health and cleanliness throughout all the services we provide, always keeping an eye on, and reassessing official health guidance to ensure we are working to the most relevant and high standard practices. We are also in conversations with our safari partners in Tanzania to ensure we are satisfied with the level of controls provided by other third-party camps and providers, alongside our own camps and services.

Before arrival

We encourage all guests to apply and process their visas online before travel. You can process your online visa application HERE. This will limit contact on arrival at the airport.

At least 24-hours before your arrival into Tanzania you will need to complete a health surveillance form online. Once complete you will be supplied with a health number for presentation at the airport. You can find the health surveillance form HERE.

All arrivals into Tanzania will be asked to present a negative PCR test taken within 96 hours of your arrival. Arrivals into Tanzania will also be required to complete a rapid flow test at the airport.

On arrival into camp

Our staff have all received detailed training on social distancing measures and safe interaction with our guests. We will be welcoming you with open hearts, but there will be no handshakes, social distancing guidelines will be adhered to, and strict luggage handling procedures are in place which our team will explain on arrival. On arrival in camp every guest will have their temperature taken by our camp managers, using a digital handheld temperature scanner. Once guest rooms have been cleaned and disinfected, the rooms will be closed, and the guests will be the first people to enter their rooms.

In camp

Camp crews will be operating in teams who will arrive in camp in two-week isolation rotations. While in isolation each team will have no access to other teams, front of house, or guests until they have completed their two-week isolation and have passed daily temperature checks. Once they have completed their two-week isolation and are working in camp, all staff will continue to have their temperatures checked daily. Our staff have received thorough training on our new procedures, so that we are best able to look after our guests and our crew as safely as possible.

Communal areas

All communal areas, camp wide, will be cleaned and sanitised daily and will have hand washing and cleaning stations located throughout for use by both staff and guests. Each area of camp will have a dedicated front of house, housekeeping and cleaning team, allowing our crews to concentrate on certain areas of camp and not move between communal areas. This also ensures that our guests will have interactions with only a small select crew of staff who will look after them during their stay.

The rooms

All rooms will be cleaned, sanitised and disinfected between guests. New guests will be the first people into the room after cleaning. Room ‘Cleaning Hot Spots,’ which are areas requiring additional cleaning, have been identified and will sit alongside individual check lists held and checked by our managers. Camp staff will be equipped with special PPE to keep them safe when cleaning and handling guest items such as laundry, baggage and emptying dustbins from rooms.

Dining

Our safari kitchens have always worked to the strictest international health and hygiene standards and will continue to do so with additional sanitisation practices and checks in place across all camps. All meals in camp will be served privately to each group with tables in the eating areas safely distanced from neighbouring tables. Meals will all be plated or brought to tables in individual serving dishes, and no buffets will be served.

Pool and shops

Our camp swimming pools, and plunge pools, will remain open and will be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis. Entrance to the pool is at the guest's discretion, and we ask that only one group of guests travelling together enter the pool at any one time. Our camp shops will also remain open under strict cleaning processes, and like the pools, entrance to our shops is at the guest's discretion and we ask that only one group of guests who are travelling together enter the shop at any one time, working with our staff to respect social distancing.

Game drives

All safari vehicles will be cleaned and sanitised before each activity and kitted out with disinfectants and hand sanitisers. Private game drives can only be guaranteed if a private guide and vehicle has been pre-booked and paid for. Covid protocols are in place on both our shared and private game drives.

On safari

Activities while on safari with us, such as sundowners, walking safaris and bush meals will be set up privately per vehicle. If guests are in a shared vehicle, activities will also be shared. Our teams will ensure that everything is set up and can be enjoyed alongside standard protocols and guidelines.
