News from relief manager Richard

26 August 2019

In front of me, blue water stretches to a hazy horizon.

Behind, layer upon layer of forested mountains… my home for 2 weeks. I’m here at Greystoke as Relief Manager, while Babs and Fabs head off for some well-deserved R&R. Luckily for me, the camp is a well-oiled machine, and guests are looked after with speed, grace & big smiles by the amazing staff. In the forest, the usual soap opera that is chimpanzee society carries on in its breathless fashion: Primus hasn’t been seen for a while - is he going to be ousted? If so, who is tough enough to make a move - will it be wily Teddy? Or is Michio in with a chance? Zulfa has a 3-week old baby, a brand new addition to the community…. Stop press!

The Saba florida fruits are almost ripe! One day last week, the chimps were oddly unsettled, scarcely coming down from the trees. All became clear when Tracker Baraka spotted a leopard slipping ghost-like through the forest… All is as it should be in this sacred space... ..
